NICE Kids!

I always enjoy taking pictures of children because they easily forget you’re even there, even if your carrying a 1.5kg lens like the Nikkor 70-200 VR :) . The company that I work at, NICE Systems, holds a summer camp for the employee kids every year. As in last year, I had the opportunity to take some photos.

The 70-200 VR is such an excellent lens with great sharpness, colors, contrast and bokeh! but since a new version of this lens was just introduced, it was a good opportunity to be reminded how good of a lens it is.

    Hi Avi,

A quick question… which lenses do you currently have?
If I understand correctly you have:
    Nikkor 70mm VR f2.8
    Nikkor 50mm 1.4D
    Nikkor 35mm 1.8
    Sigma 70mm Macro
    Any others?

So, let’s say you go on vacation – which lens would you take as a walk around lens?
I guess you can carry them all but it’s wouldn’t be very convenient to change a lens every 5 minutes… at least for me…
And if you do carry them all – which lens spends the most time on your camera?

    We own a D90 + Nikkor 18-200 VR + Nikkor 50mm 1.8D prime + Nikkor 18-105 VR (thinking about selling the 18-105mm)

The Nikkor 18-200 spends most of it’s time attached to our camera since it’s so convenient – however it’s image quality at the long end leaves a bit to desire… usable but not razor sharp.

    Regards,
    Lilach

Hi Lilach. I have the Nikkor 70-200m VR F2.8, there is no Nikkor 70mm F2.8 VR for now. Moreover, I have the 35mm F2.0 AF-D which a Full Frame lens as opposed to the F1.8 version. In addition, I have the Sigma 10-20mm and Nikkor 18-70mm DX F3.5-4.5.

What i take with me changes all the time but indeed the 70-200mm is not a good travel lens. It also depends if not being conspicuous is important.

For my 2 month trip to Argentina and Chile I took the Sigma 10-20, 50mm and 35mm. Did not take any normal zoom and I was happy with my decision but I love shooting with prime lens and i don’t mind replacing lenses for the add values (that they give ME). However, for different occasions I will take different lenses.

If I want a single lens to walk around it will be either the 35mm, 50mm or 18-70mm.

Hope it answers your question. Feel free to ask if you have any more and thanks for reading the blog :)

    Hi Avi,

    Thanks for your reply.

Why would a full frame lens help you with your D300 which has a DX sensor? for the future D700 which is in your plan ? ;-)

Also, is it really worth having the 35mm & the 50mm ? isn’t one enough? we have the 50mm 1.8D – why would I want to have the 35mm? I’m thinking to myself that if I had to choose between changing a lens or taking a few steps back from where I’m standing to achieve the same effect – I would probably choose the stepping back.

Also, why are you using the 18-70 and not the 18-105 VR? we have the 18-105VR and it is SHARP + the extra zoom range + the VR. And the speed is the same (same aperture range).
